FEMA Announces Next Webinar In the Community Preparedness Webinar Series

FEMA’s Individual & Community Preparedness Division is excited to announce the first 2011 webinar in the Community Preparedness Webinar Series: Collaborative Planning - Engagement of the Whole Community. The Community Preparedness Webinar Series provides up-to-date information on community preparedness topics and resources available to citizens, community organizations, and Citizen Corps Councils. This LIVE webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, January 11th at 2:00 EST and will provide participants with an introduction to emergency planning, including an update on the changes to CPG 101 v.2.0, the planning guidance for state, territorial, tribal, and local planners.  Key to emergency planning is the involvement of the entire community in both the planning process and implementation of the plan.  Participants will walk away from the webinar with an increased understanding of the CPG 101 standardized planning process and how to engage the necessary individuals as part of the planning team.  Webinar login will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of the webinar and registration is not required.  A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

Presenting will be Donald Lumpkins who currently serves as Branch Chief for National Planning Coordination and Assistance, National Preparedness Directorate (NPD), at FEMA.  In this position he oversees the development of national planning doctrine, catastrophic preparedness planning initiatives and tailored technical assistance programs to support prevention, protection, response, and recovery missions.

The Community Preparedness Webinar Series features new community preparedness topics and is free to the public. Each webinar will accommodate the first 500 visitors that enter the website at the time of the webinar.  In addition to airing live, the webinar will be recorded and viewable at your convenience on the Citizen Corps website (www.citizencorps.gov) usually within 24 hours after the live webcast.  To join the webinar live simply go to www.citizencorps.gov/news/webcasts/planning.shtm prior to the webinar and sign in as a guest.

• On Dec. 30, FEMA Deputy Administrators Timothy Manning and Richard Serino, along with Multilingual Representative Mayra Lopez-de-Victoria, participated in a radio media tour with 24 stations across the country.

• Throughout the holiday season, FEMA Leadership accross the country have been encouraging citizens to Resolve to Be Ready in 2011.  Among other things, they ahve written op-eds in  The Tennessean, Everett Daily Herald, Oregon Live, Los Angeles Daily News, Southeast Missourian and Boston Herald encourage readers to take the simple steps to be prepared.

FEMA Private Sector Webinar: Earthquake Safety & Mitigation for Schools

A one-hour webinar for school officials, teachers, facility managers, and other local stakeholders interested in learning how to reduce earthquake risks and take actions to ensure school safety and continued operations. Information is based on FEMA 395: Incremental Seismic Rehabilitation of School Buildings (K-12): Providing Protection to People and Buildings, which is available for download at http://www.fema.gov/library/viewRecord.do?id=1980

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Numerous school buildings located in multiple States and U.S. territories are vulnerable to earthquake damage and losses. This includes potential:

• Death and injury of students, teachers, and staff
• Damage to or collapse of buildings
• Damage and loss of furnishings, equipment, and building contents
• Disruption of educational programs and school operations
• And inability of the community to use schools as temporary shelters
• At this webinar, you will learn the following:
• How to assess and analyze your earthquake risks
• How to develop an actionable plan to reduce and manage earthquake risks
• How to initiate an earthquake risk reduction plan for existing school buildings that were
• not designed and constructed to meet modern building codes
