Welcome to the Brooksie  Bugle!!

Training PicWelcome to the first issue of the 2010 Brooksie Bugle. This  is a newsletter  for training program participants and supporters of the program. It has training tips, motivational items and important information for you as you go through this year's program.  If you have any questions or want to see something included, let me know. (sbarnes@crim.org) This is for you!

It's hard to believe that we are already at the second week of the training program.  We had 30 people in the program the last two years and this year we have 108 participants!!!  I am proud of all you returning participants and so excited to welcome all the  new ones. This will be a great summer, you will get in shape, make friends, set a goal and have a wonderful time.

Remember that your group leaders and I are here to help you.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact any of the group leaders.  Most of the group leaders have been participants in this program so they know EXACTLY what you are going through and thinking.  They have experience, enthusiasm and are here to help you achieve your goals.

Kudos to...

All of you who have started the training program, especially if this is out of  your "comfort zone"  Also remember that no matter how bad of a run you "think" that you had, it is better than sitting at home on the couch eating bon-bons or a bag of potato chips and watching Bonanza re-runs.

Things to Know:

facebook iconDo you have a Facebook page?  Well so does  The Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5K!  Become a fan and receive updates, information and motivational quotes. (Sort of like this but in a shorter format :))

Have you gotten some good running shoes and clothes?  If you were playing hockey, you would make sure that you had the proper equipment and clothing, the same is true for running.  Go to a running specialty store to get what you need.  They can help you make good choices and you get a discount at Runnin' Gear (there is a flyer in your packet).

There are some good spots on the web for workout clothes also.  Check out: Two Roads Fitness, Junonia (both for women), Road Runner Sports, and Running Warehouse.  If you have a favorite on-line shop, let me know and I can include it in another Bugle.

Along with your water, you may want to bring a bandana or something to carry with you to wipe up sweat.  It is not fun to have sweat running in your eyes during your workout.

Something To Think About:

You probably have been feeling some aches and pains following your first couple of runs or walks.  This is totally normal, especially if you haven't been working out.  The important thing is that you don't stop now!!  Make sure that you are drinking enough water the day before and if you are achy afterward take an ice bath, or ice the sore area, and take some ibuprofen.  Make sure that  you are doing your "homework", on your non-group day, make sure  that you are getting in your run or walks.  Get a friend to go with you, talk to other group members and set up another time to meet or take a family member with you.

Remember to eat healthy and get enough rest.  Hopefully this  training program will put you on the road to a lifetime of healthy choices.

Thanks to those who attended the  nutrition and stretching clinic that was hosted by McLaren.   We will be trying out some of those stretches in upcoming weeks.
