Watch the sandhill cranes as they migrate south

Come join us, as each fall, tens of thousands of sandhill cranes visit Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area’s shallow marshes. During what's called Indiana's largest wildlife spectacle, Jasper-Pulaski FWA hosts up to 30,000 cranes a day.

Indiana Dunes State Park is planning its second annual field trip, Saturday, Nov. 14 to see the cranes of Jasper-Pulaski FWA. The $20 fee includes a program, bus ride and snacks. You'll leave the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center at 2 p.m., and should return back to the Nature Center around 6 p.m. To register call (219) 926-1390.

New exhibit to open at McCormick's Creek Nature Center

Join us for the dedication at McCormick's Creek Nature Center on Friday, Nov. 6. The fun begins at 11:30 a.m., and all are welcome.

The new exhibit replaces items that were more than 20 years old, and includes a replica of a cave entrance, a look at the glaciers that covered Indiana, lots of hands-on activities, a diorama with a "turtle run" for live turtles, a kids play space with puppets and books, and exhibits about the families who owned the land before McCormick's Creek was a state park.

The Nature Center will be open throughout the winter. For more information about McCormick's Creek State Park, visit www.dnr.IN.gov/parklake.

New Outdoor Indiana magazine features calendar

2010calendar

Thinking 2010 yet? Outdoor Indiana magazine is. The November-December issue, months in the making, debuts in a few days, featuring the famous full-color calendar, presented as a 16-page removable insert. It's packed with listings of DNR events.

The annual collector's item issue features exclusive photos of the best of Indiana, including shots of Parke County, Mounds State Park, Beck's Mill near Salem, Johnson County, Warren County, Prophetstown State Park and Tippecanoe River State Park.

Use the calendar to pick a date to ski or snowboard Indiana, as detailed in the cover story about Paoli Peaks in Paoli and Lawrenceburg's Perfect North Slopes.

The issue culminates the 75th anniversary for DNR's 48-page full-color magazine. Subscriptions are $12 for a year (six issues) or $20 for two years. You also can ask for Outdoor Indiana at most Borders and Barnes and Noble stores in the state and at DNR properties. Single copies sell for $3. To subscribe for yourself, a friend or relative, or for more information, call (317) 233-3046 or go to OutdoorIndiana.org.

spencer bass

'Wear It Indiana' winner is Spencer Paton

On Sept. 23 the ‘Wear It Indiana' campaign held its Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Marine $1,000 shopping spree drawing. DNR director Rob Carter reached into nearly 3,000 ‘Wear It’ pledge cards that had been signed by boaters at ‘Wear It Indiana’ campaign sites statewide, and drew the name of Spencer Paton.

Spencer is an 8-year-old Cub Scout from Greenwood. He signed the ‘Wear It Indiana’ pledge card during the 2009 Indiana State Fair promising that he would wear his life jacket.

Spencer said that he always wears his life jacket when he’s fishing with his grandfather.
